I like the pseudo-character calligraphy work of Gu Wenda, which I have seen in the Met, and that of Wang Tiande. Ink Art – more contemporary calligraphy from the Met.
The contemporary calligrapher Xu Bing is famous for his many original approaches to calligraphy, including his intriguing Book of the Sky and Landscript. He is constantly challenging and subverting expectations of text. In these videos he explains his square word calligraphy.
In the Central Academy in Beijing, he had devised new signs in square word – but using pinyin instead of English! I wish I had taken some photos of that. Interestingly, there is now a modified version of Sino-Roman script.
There is a lot of innovation in contemporary calligraphy.
