In 2003 I was on a cruise on the Yangzi, from damply-vertical Chongqing to the partially-built new Three Gorges Dam. It was a relaxing couple of days, with plenty of geology, river life and construction.
One excursion was along the very lovely Shennong gorge (later flooded when the dam was completed), re-creating the historical experience of “tracking” boats along the rapids. I found being pulled by a team of men very embarrassing. The gorge was beautiful and peaceful, but at the end-point of our trip, were enterprising stallholders!
